About Add page numbers

Add page numbers stamps a sequential number on the pages of your PDF. Pick a corner or the center at the top or bottom of the page, set the number to start from, choose a font size and color, and every selected page gets its number in the same spot.

It is useful for merged reports, legal bundles, theses and manuals that need numbered pages for reference. You can skip a cover page or start at any number to continue an existing sequence. Numbers are added as real text in your browser, with no upload and no watermark.

How to use Add page numbers

  1. Drop one or more PDFs onto the page or select Choose PDF.
  2. Choose a Position: top left, top center, top right, bottom left, bottom center or bottom right.
  3. Set the Start number, the font size and the color.
  4. Enter the pages to number, such as 2-20 to skip a cover page, or leave the field blank for all pages.
  5. Select Apply and download the numbered PDF.

Features

  • Six positions at the top or bottom of the page: left, center or right.
  • Any starting number from 0 upward, so you can continue numbering from another document.
  • Helvetica numbers from 6 to 100 points, in any color.
  • Numbers only the pages you select, counting up from the start number across the selection.
  • Placed 24 points, about a third of an inch, from the page edge and adjusted for rotated pages.
  • Added as real PDF text, so the numbers can be selected and searched.

Common uses

  • Numbering a court bundle or exhibit set so every page can be cited.
  • Adding page numbers to a thesis or dissertation before submission.
  • Numbering a report after merging several PDFs into one.
  • Making printed handouts easy to put back in order if they get mixed up.

Tips

  • Number pages after merging, so the sequence runs through the whole document.
  • If the document already has a footer, choose a top position or a smaller font size to avoid overlap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I skip numbering on the first page?

Type a range that starts at page 2 in the Pages field, such as 2-24, and keep the start number at 1. The cover stays unnumbered and the second page shows 1. Set the start number to 2 if the cover should still count.

Can I use formats like Page 1 of 10 or Roman numerals?

No. The tool adds plain numbers such as 1, 2 and 3. For a custom label on a few pages, Add text to PDF can place any text you type, wherever you want it.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Enter any whole number from 0 upward in Start number. This is useful when a PDF continues an earlier document, for example when chapter two should start at page 41.

Will the page numbers cover existing content?

They are placed about 24 points from the chosen edge, where most documents leave a margin. If your pages have content or a footer there, pick another position or a smaller font size and check the result before downloading.
