Social media image sizes and aspect ratios

Prepare square, portrait, vertical and banner images with common working sizes. Learn crop versus contain, export quality and what to verify before posting.

Choose the shape before the pixel count

A feed image, a full-screen story, a profile image and a link preview can use different display shapes. Start with the destination placement rather than exporting one file for every use. A platform may crop previews differently from the full image, and its upload requirements can change. Check the current help page and upload preview for the exact placement you plan to use.

Common working sizes in the resizer

  • Square: 1080 × 1080 pixels, a 1:1 ratio.
  • Portrait: 1080 × 1350 pixels, a 4:5 ratio.
  • Story: 1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 ratio.
  • Video thumbnail: 1280 × 720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio.
  • Banner: 1500 × 500 pixels, a 3:1 ratio.
  • Open Graph: 1200 × 630 pixels, approximately 1.91:1.

These are convenient presets in QuickConvertOnline, not a promise that every social network requires or accepts them. You can enter a custom width and height when a destination specifies another size. Keep the source image and your editable design so a different export is easy later.

Crop or contain: make the choice deliberately

Cover fills the entire requested frame by cropping from the center. It is useful for a photo with spare space around its subject. Contain fits the entire source inside the frame and adds spare background space, which is useful when a diagram, logo or document must remain complete. Choose a background color or transparency where the output format supports it.

When the important subject is off-center, crop manually before resizing. A generic center crop does not understand faces, product labels or text that must remain readable.

Resize and export

  1. Open Social media image resizer and add one image or a batch of up to 20.
  2. Choose a preset, or enter the destination’s requested width and height.
  3. Select Cover or Contain and inspect the image edges and spare background.
  4. Choose PNG, JPG or WebP. For lossy output, compare the chosen quality and result size.
  5. Download each output or the batch ZIP, then inspect the actual upload preview before publishing.

Protect text, logos and important details

  • Keep important content away from edges that may be cropped in a preview.
  • Allow room for destination interface overlays such as captions or buttons.
  • Check the result at the actual size it will be viewed, including a narrow phone screen.
  • Avoid enlarging a small source: more pixels do not reconstruct missing detail.
  • Keep a separate editable master so output dimensions can be changed without repeated lossy saves.

Choose a format for the content

PNG is a useful lossless choice for sharp diagrams, screenshots and graphics with text, although it can be large for photographs. JPG works widely for photographs but has no alpha transparency, so this site fills transparent areas with white. WebP can preserve alpha transparency while offering compact lossy output. Check both destination format support and the actual result size; one format does not always win.

Why a correct-sized image can still look soft

The destination may create a smaller preview, re-encode the file or display it at a different size. An already soft or repeatedly saved source also remains soft after resizing. Start with a good original, avoid unnecessary re-encoding, and check the published preview rather than only the local master.

A final publishing checklist

  1. Verify the destination’s current placement, dimensions, file-size limit and permitted format.
  2. Inspect both the full image and any cropped thumbnail or profile preview.
  3. Check text contrast and readability at normal viewing size.
  4. Keep the master and note which export was used, so the image can be regenerated if requirements change.
