Image to Base64
Encode any image as a Base64 data URI to embed in HTML, CSS or JSON. Copy it in one click or download it as a text file. Free, private and with no upload.
About Image to Base64
The image to Base64 converter reads an image file and turns it into a Base64 data URI, such as data:image/png;base64,… that you can paste straight into HTML, CSS, JSON or Markdown. The encoding uses the original file’s bytes exactly, so the image is not re-compressed or altered.
It is useful for developers embedding small icons, email templates that need inline images, and anyone sending an image through a text-only channel. You can copy the result or download it as a .txt file. Encoding happens in your browser, so the image is never uploaded.
How to use Image to Base64
- Drop an image onto the upload box, click Choose image, or paste an image from the clipboard.
- Wait a moment for the Base64 box to fill with the complete data URI.
- Click Copy to put the data URI on your clipboard, or Download to save it as image-base64.txt.
- Paste the value into an img src attribute, a CSS url() or wherever you need it.
Features
- Produces a complete data URI including the correct MIME type, such as image/png or image/jpeg.
- Encodes the original file byte for byte, with no re-compression.
- Works with JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, BMP, AVIF and other formats your browser can open.
- Handles images up to 30 MB.
- One-click copy and a plain-text download of the result.
Common uses
- Inlining small icons or background images in CSS to save an extra request.
- Embedding an image in a single-file HTML page or email template.
- Storing a small image inside a JSON payload or configuration file.
- Testing an API that expects images as Base64 strings.
Tips
- Inline only small images; large data URIs make HTML and CSS files heavy and are not cached separately.
- If an API wants the raw Base64 without the prefix, delete everything up to and including the comma.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Base64 data URI?
It is a text representation of a file that a browser can use in place of a URL. It starts with data:, the file’s MIME type and ;base64, followed by the encoded bytes. Browsers display it exactly like a linked image.
Why is the Base64 text bigger than my image?
Base64 represents every 3 bytes of data with 4 text characters, so the encoded string is about a third larger than the original file. That overhead is why data URIs are best kept for small images.
Is the image compressed or changed when encoded?
No. The tool encodes the file you choose exactly as it is, so decoding the string gives back an identical file. To make the string shorter, compress or resize the image first, then encode it.
How do I use the data URI in HTML or CSS?
In HTML, place it in the src attribute of an img tag: <img src="data:image/png;base64,…">. In CSS, wrap it in url(), for example background-image: url("data:image/png;base64,…").
