About Base64 to text

Base64 to text decodes an encoded byte sequence and then reads the resulting bytes as UTF-8. The input may use the usual Base64 alphabet or the URL-safe alphabet that substitutes hyphens and underscores.

It is useful for inspecting text payloads, small test fixtures and encoded API values. A valid Base64 value can still represent a binary image, archive or other non-text data; such data is not necessarily valid UTF-8 and should be opened with a suitable file tool instead.

How to use Base64 to text

  1. Paste or open the encoded string.
  2. Keep Decode selected in the toolbar.
  3. Read the decoded text or inspect any invalid-Base64 or invalid-UTF-8 error.
  4. Copy or download the decoded text, or switch to Encode to check it.

Features

  • Accepts the standard and URL-safe Base64 alphabets.
  • Ignores whitespace around or within the encoded value.
  • Uses strict UTF-8 decoding instead of silently inserting replacement characters.
  • Keeps the encoded input visible while displaying readable output.

Common uses

  • Inspecting a Base64 text field in a development response.
  • Decoding a known UTF-8 test fixture.
  • Checking whether an encoded value contains expected spaces or line breaks.

Tips

  • Do not execute or open decoded content simply because the encoding was valid.

Frequently asked questions

Why does valid Base64 fail to decode as text?

Base64 can carry arbitrary bytes. Those bytes may be an image or another binary file rather than valid UTF-8 text, which this tool deliberately rejects.

Can I paste an entire data URI?

Paste the Base64 payload itself, without a “data:…;base64,” prefix. Use the image Base64 converter for image data URIs.

Does decoding verify that data is authentic?

No. Decoding neither authenticates the source nor checks a cryptographic signature. Treat the decoded content as untrusted input.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

The tool processes the text in this page, on your device. It does not send the input to a conversion service or save it to an account. Advertising and ordinary website requests are separate from this local text processing. Copy or download any result you want to keep before leaving the tool.

Is my input uploaded?
