Paragraph counter
Count nonempty paragraphs separated by blank lines. See line and word totals too, with a private local preview that updates as you edit.
About Paragraph counter
The paragraph counter counts nonempty blocks of text separated by blank lines. The separate Lines statistic helps you distinguish paragraph structure from manual line breaks in copied text.
It is useful for reviewing an essay outline, checking an email’s structure or cleaning text copied from a PDF. A soft visual wrap in the input is not a new paragraph; a blank line between blocks is what separates paragraphs here.
How to use Paragraph counter
- Type, paste or open the text you want to inspect.
- Use a blank line between paragraphs that should count separately.
- Read Paragraphs and compare it with the Lines total.
- Adjust the paragraph breaks and check the live result.
Features
- Counts nonempty blocks with one or more blank lines between them.
- Ignores empty blocks at the start and end of the input.
- Displays physical line breaks separately in the Lines statistic.
- Also shows words, characters, sentences and time estimates.
Common uses
- Reviewing whether a cover letter has clearly separated sections.
- Checking paragraph structure in text copied from another document.
- Preparing reading exercises with a specified number of paragraphs.
Tips
- If copied material contains a newline after every printed line, inspect the breaks before treating the paragraph total as meaningful.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a paragraph?
A nonempty block separated from the next by a blank line. Several consecutive blank lines still form one separation rather than empty counted paragraphs.
Why does a single Enter not create another paragraph?
A single line break starts another physical line inside the same block. Insert a blank line if the two blocks should be counted as separate paragraphs.
Do wrapped lines change the result?
No. Text wrapping caused by the box width is only visual. The counter uses actual newline characters in the input.
