About Base64 to image

The Base64 to image converter decodes a Base64 string back into a picture you can see and download. Paste either a complete data URI or just the raw Base64 text; the tool detects whether the data is a PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, WebP, AVIF or SVG image and shows a preview right away.

Developers use it to inspect images stored in JSON responses, databases, logs or HTML source. You can save the decoded picture as PNG, JPG or WebP. Decoding runs in your browser, so the data never leaves your device, which matters when the string comes from private systems.

How to use Base64 to image

  1. Paste a Base64 string or a data:image/… URI into the text box.
  2. Wait a moment for it to decode automatically, or click Decode.
  3. Check the preview and choose PNG, JPG or WebP as the output format.
  4. Click Download to save the image file.

Features

  • Accepts raw Base64 or full data URIs; spaces and line breaks are ignored.
  • Detects PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, WebP, AVIF and SVG data from the file contents, not the prefix.
  • Clear error messages for invalid Base64 or data that is not an image.
  • Saves the image as PNG, JPG or WebP, with a quality slider for lossy formats.
  • Decodes images up to 30 MB.

Common uses

  • Viewing an image embedded in an API response or JSON file.
  • Recovering an inline image from HTML or CSS source code.
  • Checking what a Base64 string in a database or log actually contains.
  • Saving an image from an email template as a regular file.

Tips

  • Copy the string completely; a truncated Base64 value cannot be decoded.
  • Animated GIF data is shown and saved as a single frame.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the data:image prefix?

No. You can paste either the full data URI or only the Base64 characters. The tool reads the decoded bytes to work out the image type, so it handles both forms the same way.

Why does it say the text is not valid Base64?

The decoder expects standard Base64 using letters, digits, plus and slash, with optional = padding. URL-safe Base64 that uses - and _ is not accepted, and missing characters from a truncated copy also cause this error. Check that you copied the whole string.

What does “The decoded data is not a supported image” mean?

The Base64 decoded correctly, but the bytes are not a PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, WebP, AVIF or SVG image. The string may contain another file type, such as a PDF, or it may be text that was encoded rather than an image.

Which format is the downloaded image saved in?

The decoded picture is saved in the format you pick: PNG by default, or JPG or WebP. PNG keeps transparency and every pixel exactly. Choose JPG or WebP when you want a smaller file and adjust the quality slider.
